Mark Hamill’s Wing Commander 3 Flight Suit

Around 8 months back I came across this article in PC Gamer magazine in which there was a competition to win Mark Hamill’s flight suit from Wing Commander 3. This is something any Wing Commander fan would love to have in their possession and I couldn’t help but wonder where it ended up. We need wonder no longer as the winner of that competition 18 years ago got in touch this week. The suit is still is his possession and he’s been generous enough to provide some photos. I’ve kept all of these at their original size so they are relatively large.

First the whole suit in its glorious entirety:-

Rather than fastening conventionally, the suit uses Velcro fasteners on the buckles and at the shoulders:-

Here are some of the details up close. The first is some sort of valve, presumably for connecting an air supply. The other is the wrist bands supposedly for an airtight fitting to the gloves no doubt:-

Next we have the shoulder pads + a really cool stitched Terran Confederation logo:-

More close-ups. Mark Hamill’s name is written on the inside just as shown in the PC Gamer article. The other photo shows some mysterious red spots on the front, possibly from the death scene where Blair is “honoured” in the same way as Angel or maybe just general muck. The suit arrived fairly grimy apparently and is still just as it was. I’m guessing it might have been done deliberately as it wouldn’t have looked right on the FMV if Blair was too pristine.

And to finish off a picture from the back:-

Massive thanks to Matt for all these photo’s. When I saw this competition, I half expected the suit to have ended up with someone who wasn’t all that big a Wing Commander fan but I needn’t have worried as it clearly ended up in good hands. If anyone ever wanted to make a replica you should now have all the detail you could ever wish for.

I haven’t got anything that can compete with this but I brought some wearable Origin gear back from Austin last year so I’ve decided to keep the theme up and post some photo’s of my own every day for the rest of the week. As ever, I’ll save the best for last.

Wing Commander Prophecy Review – PC Guide

Last week allowed no time for blogging and having to rebuild my PC after the hard drive went didn’t help any. I’m off work this week though which should give me chance to get on top of things at last and maybe even post some new content on here while I’m at it.

This is the last Wing Commander Prophecy review I’ve got left and comes from the Spring 1998 PC Guide. This was a monthly rather than quarterly magazine so I’ve no idea why they have a Spring issue. Be that as it may, the reviewer doesn’t appear to recall the plot of WC4 too well but it’s another positive reception on the whole:-

Wing Commander Fan Site Of The Year!

websiteoftheyear_winner_2012

I’m slightly shocked to say that this site has apparently won Wing Commander fan site of the year at the Wing Commander CIC! I wasn’t expecting the nomination let alone a win. Of course I wouldn’t have stood a chance if the Wing Commander fan site of this and every other year wasn’t the one running the competition. Tempting as it is to post a lengthy acceptance speech, I’ll just say thank you to all that voted and moreover to everyone who is keeping the community alive and helped make 2012 such a great year for Wing Commander.

I think the award is purely honorary but if there is a golden Loaf statue in the post I’ll do my best to find a spot for it.

Paths Of Destiny Order Card – Design Board

While the pile of Origin ephemera I picked up a year back contained a fair share of obviously collectible items, it also contained a good deal of odds and ends that probably only have any appeal to the more “dedicated” fans such as myself. That doesn’t stop me sharing them however and this is one such item, a design board dated September 7 1988 for the Paths Of Destiny clue book flyer that was bundled into copies of Ultima V.

As with all these design documents, it’s a mosaic of cut out sections glued together. I can’t compare this to the finished version since I haven’t got one in my copy of Ultima V and the Internet has failed me in digging up a photo. I do notice that the clue book cover here contains a full size picture in the arch window framing and no title. The other thing that struck me was the 3-4 week delivery time which I seem to recall being standard for anything mail order when I was a kid. I doubt Amazon would be the size it is now if this was still the case.
