This is the second part of PC Format’s Wing Commander 3 preview, scanned from the August 1994 issue. It’s an interview with Frank Savage who was responsible for heading up the playable side of the game while Chris Roberts was busy directing the movies:-
As always, thanks for the great post! This was a very interesting article because of the things he mention that don’t show up in the final game:
– the losing endgame doesn’t tell you how many waves you survived.
– the trainsim doesn’t have his “weird esoteric missions”… and certainly no terrain missions! (Which is a shame, this would have been a really cool way to extend the game without spending extra money.)
– the Kilrathi transport with the “weird shape” isn’t in the (PC) version of the game. I have never quite undestood what happened here. The triangular transport shows up in the pre-release screenshots, it appears in the 3DO version and it shows up in a Wing Commander IV cutscene… even in the card game… but the finished Wing Commander III has a transport that’s a far less interesting set of boxes and latticeworks.
